Idk but I do too. About 1.5 to 2 inches every shot. Feel more control. Don’t lose distance based on mechanics.

Probably just to take power off of it in a weird distance where you can’t club up

In his own words:
>The most obvious quirk in my technique is that I choke way up on the grip — about two full inches. And I choke up with every club in the bag. I started doing this out of necessity: I have a short torso and long arms, and if I took a “normal” grip I’d be too far away from the ball. Over the years, however, I noticed that the choke gave me more control — especially with the driver — and I’ve never looked back.
He used his dad’s clubs as a kid growing up that were way too long so he would choke up a lot on them. He ended up just getting used to it and it became habit. Nike tried making him shorter clubs but he would end up choking those up even more. It also gives him a lot more control. I’m a long time AK fan.

He likes to. He plays a lot on feel. And he has said he just likes how it feels.
When he was with Nike they tried to shorten some clubs for him, adjust swing weight, etc.. But he didn’t like it, so he likes em standard and chokes up

because he wants too? fleetwood does this too

I remember when he was asked this when he was younger. He said he grew up playing adult clubs (his dad’s I’m assuming). So he always had to choke up. As he grew he still kept choking up because it was comfortable and familiar. He said he tried shorter/better fitting clubs but it felt foreign not choking up.

Same reason most pros use drivers that are an inch or more shorter than most amatures use, despite most of them being significantly taller than most amatures.
After_Flow2354
I would think this kinda counterbalances the club?

I’m 6’3” with long arms and move down the grip on all my clubs – better control and consistency.

Basically, back weighting his clubs. Jack back weighted his, and you see what it did for him.

Lol I love this. I am a club fitter, and it annoys me how much people in this sub think everybody needs to get custom fit for clubs.
If you can’t make what you’re swinging work, you’re probably not gonna be able to make anything else work much better. It’s nice to get fit, but practicing is a much more effective way to improve.

I have a buddy like this. I chopped his club short for him one time and it ruined his swing

Do you need to be an American to instantly recognise the AK abbreviation?

lol i feel you, some courses just have those awkward holes that make no sense. still fun tho…
I started doing this a couple weeks ago and… it helped. Not sure why but it’s part of my swing now

You get to control the rascal better. 🤣

Control. Dispersion. Sacrifices some yardage for accuracy.

Best take I’ve heard on choking down on a club is “where do you grip a pencil when when writing”
JAW1973
He said he was a tiny kid and he couldn’t properly swing the clubs because they were too heavy when he gripped them full length, so he choked them so they were lighter and he could manage the swing better. He just never changed it as he got older

Baseball—choke up. Golf—choke down. Both: choke (at times)

Learnt the game with clubs that were way too long and it just stuck
He always has. There was an article many years ago where he explained why
Tommy Fleetwood does too for all clubs. Others choke down for distance control.
I nearly choked up when I saw AK win on Sunday. Awesome stuff.
Newer golfers here are just learning about AK not knowing there’s a whole Playing Lesson with the Pros episode they’re yet to discover.
